About People for Pets
People for Pets was founded more than 20 years ago by a small group of dedicated volunteers committed to improving the lives of companion animals. In its early years, animals were cared for in private foster homes. In 2001, the organization purchased its current facility, allowing for continued growth and expanded services.
We are proud to be a no-kill shelter, meaning every animal remains in our care until a safe and loving forever home is found. Our organization was originally established to provide a humane alternative for stray animals in Spencer, where unclaimed dogs and cats were once euthanized after just three days. Today, unclaimed animals are transferred to our shelter after their holding period, giving them a second chance at life.
Beyond cat and dog adoptions, People for Pets provides a wide range of community services. We frequently assist law enforcement with cases involving animal abuse and neglect. We also work with landlords when pets are abandoned in rental properties, and we support elderly individuals who must surrender pets due to health concerns or transitions into assisted living. Additionally, we take in animals from owners facing housing challenges or those at risk of being abandoned or harmed.
Community Support Funds
The Kayleen Rose Fund was established to assist pet owners who are unable to afford emergency veterinary care. In some cases, this fund also helps cover humane euthanasia when necessary. Donations to this fund are often made in memory of loved ones and play a vital role in supporting both pets and their families during difficult times.
The Find, Fix, Free Fund supports efforts to manage feral and stray cat populations in Spencer and surrounding towns in Clay County. This program helps cover the cost of spaying/neutering & vaccinating community cats, and working with individuals and municipalities to reduce overpopulation in a humane and effective way. Both funds rely on ongoing donations to continue their important work.
Our Reach and Impact
While many of our animals are adopted locally, People for Pets has successfully placed pets in homes across the country, including Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Washington, Oregon, Florida, New Jersey, and Nevada.
We also formed a partnership with Greater Good Charities after the Spencer flood in 2024. This partnership has opened up a variety of opportunities for our shelter, including flight transports to other reputable shelters across the country where the pets have a better chance at being adopted.
Over time, our service area has expanded to include animals from across Iowa and surrounding states. In addition to our rescue efforts, we are committed to community outreach.
